I've just begun a series of thought experiments. These are used when the real thing is just not possible. Probably the most famous thought experiments in the world are those of Albert Einstein. He is supposed to have rode along the front of a beam of light, traveling at, well, the speed of light. These studies in the nature of light eventually led to the Theories of Relativity. I'm not suggesting my experiment is nearly as revolutionary, but the subject is one I find intriguing and if someone has already conducted this experiment, I've not come across their results so I'm offering my own for consideration.
Here's what I've accomplished so far. The need to restrict this to my head should be quickly apparent.
Step One: I tossed two pennies into the air. They both came up heads. I wasn't too surprised at that and I repeated the experiment to see what might happen next. This time I got two tails. Again, not surprised. One more toss and, what do you know, I got one tail and one head. I know I shouldn't have, but I couldn't help it, I said, "Now that's more like it".
Step Two: For this next experiment I tossed one hundred pennies into the air. I wish I had thought about my expectations beforehand because I was not ready for what happened.
Fifty pennies came down heads, and fifty came down tails, It startled me, and I said something like, "Get out of here", and then I called someone into the room to witness my random feat.
Using the same one hundred pennies, I tried again. This time one hundred pennies landed heads up, in my thought experiment. I gasped, looked around bewildered, and ran out of the room. I was, still am, profoundly shocked. Maybe it shouldn't have, but it's kind of spooked me.
Step Three: For my last experiment I tossed one million pennies into the air. That's way over five thousand pounds, but I'm Batman in my thought experiments.
I know this will sound crazy. I wish you had been there. I'm asking you to take my word for it. Five hundred thousand pennies came down heads and five hundred thousand pennies came down tails. What are the chances of THAT?
